Xbox 360 Storage Extensions A-hoy!

This is the default text

Xbox Gamers worldwide can rejoice as following a recent announcement, larger Xbox hard drives are on the way! A 250GB drive has recently been advertised by Microsoft, and has since been put up for sale on Amazon US – retailing at the modest price of $129.99. A release in the States implies that a European debut isn’t too far away either, a step that could finally bridge the sizable gap between Xbox and PS3 users with regards to upgradable storage capacity.

.

For those who aren’t so interested in a further expensive purchase to add to their already sizable technology investment, don’t be disheartened! MicroSoft have quite an exciting alternative in the works. Arriving later this month, Xbox 360 users will be able to take advantage of external hard drives, USB keys or any other storage medium they’ve got lying around, as a Xbox Dashboard Update will be implementing new tools designed to allow these devices to be usable as external drives.

A Fantastic adaptation for the end user, no question; but with the implementation of the necessary lines of code required to transform this attractive concept into a reality, Microsoft will self eradicate the need for their horrifically expensive “Memory Units”. Although I’m keen not to bite the hand that feeds in this situation, I can’t help but question the logistics behind the move.

.

As if that wasn’t enough, from the 6th April users will also be able to use two external storage mediums in tandem (both allowing a rather generous 16GB of extra storage space a piece) offering a further 32GB of storage capacity overall. .

MajorNelson’s Blog excerpt;

“On April 6th, we will be releasing a system update over Xbox LIVE for your Xbox 360 that will allow USB flash drives to be used for storing profiles, game saves, demos and more. Once you take the system update on April 6th, you’ll be able to connect your USB flash drives to your console and head over to the memory section to configure your new storage device. Once you do that, the system will conduct a one time performance and integrity check to confirm the drive is working properly. You will then be able to configure how much storage to use on the device, up to 16 GB.”
